Thank you!

By welcoming young people into your work, you are helping us grow compassionate communities.

Year after year, we hear from students that the visit to their charity was the moment their learning became meaningful. When they have the opportunity to see firsthand the demand for social services, and the effort of committed professionals, it is, in their own words, “eye-opening”.

What is YPI?

  • YPI stands for Youth and Philanthropy Initiative

  • Students participate in a project-based competition as part of their school curriculum

  • Students identify and research local charities addressing important social issues

  • Goal: To secure a $5,000 YPI grant for their chosen charity

Benefits for Charities

  • Raise awareness about your cause among local youth and community

  • Opportunity to be selected for the $5000 YPI grant

  • Potential recruitment of volunteers and supporters

  • Opportunity to educate future generations about your mission

Preparing for Student Visits

  • Offer a brief tour of facilities (if applicable)

  • Arrange interviews with staff and volunteers

  • Provide hands-on experiences or participation in programs (if possible)

  • Share impactful client success stories

  • Discuss current projects, challenges, and upcoming events

  • Prepare print materials (annual reports, brochures) for students to take home

During the Visit

  • Communicate any necessary boundaries (e.g., photo restrictions)

  • Answer questions about programs, impact, and resource needs

  • Discuss how the community can support your work

After the Visit

  • Students will create presentations advocating for your charity

  • Top presentations advance to school finals

  • Winning team secures $5,000 grant for their chosen charity

Maximizing Collaboration

  • Consider how students can help achieve your organizational goals

  • Explore opportunities for ongoing involvement (volunteering, fundraising)

  • Leverage students' skills (e.g., social media management, video production)

  • Leverage students' presentations for visibility efforts

"The YPI program is incredibly impactful for the Parkdale Community Food Bank, both due to the educational opportunity it offers high school students to learn more about the mission of our organization and the work we do in our community; as well as the funding opportunity for the food bank to increase our reach and quality of service."

- Parkdale Community Foodbank
Winner of YPI Grant in 2023

"I think it's really important for us to connect with that next generation. I think they really have to. They have to have that personal one-to-one feeling of what it's like to be in the building, to hear the kids, to see the dedication of the staff and why it is that they're so committed to do this every day."

- Sharon McCarry, Founder, The Little Red Playhouse, Montreal
